Overview

Osteoporosis weakens bones silently, often with no symptoms until a fracture occurs — commonly in the hip, spine or wrist. Diagnosis is based on a painless bone-density (DXA) scan, together with an assessment of overall fracture risk that takes account of age, previous fractures, family history and other factors. Blood tests may be done to look for and treat any underlying causes of bone loss.

Treatment is tailored to the level of risk. Medications can slow the breakdown of bone or, for higher-risk patients, stimulate the formation of new bone, and the right choice depends on the individual. These are combined with adequate calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise, and practical steps to prevent falls — since preventing fractures is the central aim. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and excess alcohol are also addressed.
