Overview

Neuromuscular diseases are a broad group of conditions affecting the peripheral nerves, the muscles or the junction between them. They include peripheral neuropathy (for example from diabetes), carpal tunnel and other nerve entrapments, myasthenia gravis, motor neuron disease (ALS), muscular dystrophies and inflammatory muscle disease, and Guillain-Barre syndrome. Typical symptoms are weakness, numbness, tingling, cramps, muscle wasting or fatigue. Diagnosis relies on a careful clinical assessment together with EMG (electromyography) and nerve conduction studies — small electrical tests that measure how well your nerves and muscles are working — and sometimes blood tests, antibody tests, imaging or a muscle or nerve biopsy. Treatment depends entirely on the diagnosis and may include medication (for example for myasthenia gravis), immune therapies, treating the underlying cause and neuro-rehabilitation.

What happens

    Assessment

    A neurologist reviews your history and symptoms and performs a detailed neurological examination, mapping the pattern of weakness or sensory change to guide which tests are needed.

    EMG & nerve conduction studies

    Nerve conduction studies use small surface electrodes and brief electrical pulses to measure how signals travel along your nerves, while EMG uses a fine needle to record the electrical activity of selected muscles. The test is performed in the outpatient clinic and usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes.

    Diagnosis & treatment plan

    Your neurologist combines the clinical findings and test results — adding blood tests, antibody tests, imaging or a biopsy when needed — to reach a diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan tailored to your condition.

    Follow-up & rehabilitation

    Where appropriate, care continues with medication, immune therapy or other treatment alongside neuro-rehabilitation and physiotherapy, with follow-up that can be arranged in person or remotely after you return home.

They are two related electrical tests done together to assess your nerves and muscles. The nerve conduction study delivers small electrical pulses through surface electrodes, and the EMG uses a fine needle to record muscle activity. Most people feel only brief, mild discomfort — a tingling from the pulses and a small pinch from the needle — and no anaesthesia is needed.

They help diagnose and characterise peripheral neuropathy, nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, myasthenia gravis and other junction disorders, motor neuron disease, muscular dystrophies and inflammatory muscle disease, and the nerve damage seen in Guillain-Barre syndrome. The results show whether the problem lies in the nerves, the muscles or the connection between them.

Preparation is usually simple: arrive with clean skin and no lotions or creams on the area, and wear loose clothing. Tell your coordinator if you take blood thinners or have a pacemaker or other implanted device, and mention any medicines for conditions such as myasthenia gravis, as your neurologist will advise whether anything should be adjusted. Most patients do not need to stop their regular medication.
