Overview
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) divides each radiation beam into many small segments and varies their intensity, so the dose can be sculpted around an irregular tumor and kept low over sensitive organs nearby. Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) goes further, shaping the dose while the machine rotates around you in continuous arcs to deliver highly conformal treatment in a shorter session. Both are delivered on TrueBeam STx and Halcyon systems with daily image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), which uses onboard imaging to confirm the tumor's position before each treatment so the plan is reproduced accurately every day. IMRT and VMAT are used for many cancers, including prostate, head and neck, breast, gynecologic, brain and lung, often alongside surgery or chemotherapy.

A planning CT simulation, often combined with MRI or PET, maps the tumor and the healthy organs to protect. Custom immobilization — a mask, cushion or board — and skin reference marks keep you in the same position each day, and the team designs a detailed IMRT or VMAT plan tailored to your anatomy.

During treatment
At each visit, onboard image guidance confirms the target's position before the TrueBeam STx or Halcyon delivers the modulated beams — as continuous arcs for VMAT. You lie still and feel nothing; each painless session takes only minutes, repeated daily over the planned weeks.

Afterwards & results
Side effects build up gradually, are mostly limited to the treated area, and usually settle after the course ends. The team manages them with supportive care throughout, and follow-up scans and reviews assess the response. International patients receive a clear follow-up plan for after they return home.
