Electrophysiology (EP) Study

An electrophysiology (EP) study is a catheter-based test that records the heart's electrical activity from the inside to pinpoint the source of an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). It is often performed together with catheter ablation, which can treat the problem in the same session.

Overview

In an EP study, thin, flexible catheters are passed through a vein in the groin up to the heart. They record the heart's electrical signals from inside and can gently stimulate the heart to bring on the abnormal rhythm under controlled conditions, so the exact circuit or focus causing it can be mapped. It is used for unexplained palpitations, fainting that may be rhythm-related, and to plan treatment of a known arrhythmia. Because the source can be identified precisely, catheter ablation is frequently carried out straight afterwards in the same procedure.

International patients receive coordinated scheduling, a clear explanation of findings and an itemized estimate, with remote review of prior ECGs and records.

Who is a candidate?

What happens

  1. 1

    Preparation

    You fast beforehand and may be asked to stop certain medicines. The groin area is prepared and you are given sedation.

    During the study

    Catheters are guided through a groin vein to the heart under X-ray. The heart's electrical signals are recorded and the rhythm is provoked and mapped; if appropriate, ablation is performed in the same session.

    Afterwards

    You lie flat for a short period to let the puncture site seal, are monitored, and usually go home the same or next day.
