Respiratory disorders during sleep include obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, central sleep apnea syndrome, and sleep-related hypoventilation syndrome. The risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), the most common type, are obesity, old age, being male, smoking and alcohol intake, and genetic factors.
Symptoms such as snoring, witnessed apnea (cessation of breathing during sleep) being tired during the day, morning tiredness, inadequate sleep, change in character, distracted attention, and impotency are indicated for OSAS. Polysomnography is the gold standard for the diagnosis.
If left untreated, it can lead to heart rhythm problems, systemic hypertension, heart attack, diabetes, stroke, and even sudden death in sleep.
With the polysomnography ın the sleep laboratory of our center, many diseases such as respiratory diseases during sleep, restless leg syndrome, periodic leg moves, insomnia, chyne-stokes respiration are diagnosed using international scoring methods.
The optimum treatment for the patient is determined by intraoral device, using positive air pressure (PAP) devices, and surgical methods.
