Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD is a disease characterized by irreversible progressive airflow restriction. The severity and frequency of COPD, a preventable and treatable disease, presents with increased exacerbations. It often occurs in the long-term smoking middle and advanced-aged groups. The disease is indicated as the fourth common cause of death in the world and the third in Turkey.

The disease should be considered in those with shortness of breath, chronic cough, or expectorating and/or history of being exposed to risk factors of COPD. The gold standard for diagnosis is pulmonary function tests.

The treatment of COPD is planned by stage of the disease. The basic aim is to avoid progression of the disease, relieve the symptoms, improve exercising capacity and quality of life, prevent exacerbations and complications, and reduce its mortality rate. Cooperation of the patient and doctor is critical to cease smoking in particular, plan suitable medications, and use of oxygen replacement therapy and pressure respiratory support devices in advanced stages.

The patients in any stages can be monitored in our center under international guides; support is provided to cease smoking; the treatment is guided by medications and respiratory support devices; and respiratory rehabilitations. The state-of-the art technology devices (NIMV) are used for attacks at hospital conditions. The patient with chronic advanced stage can be monitored at home for treatment and respiration support devices.
